The highly anticipated Geneva Motor Show is coming up, and automakers are doing everything they can to create buzz for their products. smart (an all-lowercase name – how on trend!) is no exception, as they’ve just launched photos of their electric smart forspeed model concept.
The smart forspeed is a zero-emission roadster that will complete smart’s electric vehicle lineup, which already includes a bicycle and a scooter. According to smart, the forspeed roadster will read speeds up to 75 mph, which a rear-mounted 40bhp electric motor and a 7bhp overboost function.
The electricity for the engine is stored in a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 16.5 kWh, and the range should be roughly 84 miles. As far as charging, the smart forspeed concept car will plug into a normal, 220 volt socket, and charges quickly, in about 45 minutes.
The outer design will feature a high-gloss finish, wind deflectors with integrated solar panels that power the on-board electrics, and a honeycomb grill. The interior of the car will be a minimalist design, similar to that on a boat.
Dr. Annette Winkler, head of smart, says the forspeed is not planned as a limited series. “We have to be profitable with smart so it won’t make production,” she said. But, she said, “Elements of the car will be carried over into future projects.”
