In a surprising end, Samantha Stosur beat Serena Williams in an hour and twelve minutes, winning her first Grand Slam title, at the U.S. Open.
During the first game of the second set, Williams angrily protested a call that the umpire made, in which Williams lost a point for shouting “C’mon!” before Stosur swung at the ball. The rules as far as yelling during tennis matches are that any deliberate action, such as a noise, that could distract an opponent forfeits the point – even if there appears to be no intent on distraction. Williams was not happy about it, saying to umpire Eva Asderaki, “Aren’t you the one that screwed me over last time? That’s totally not cool.”
Stosur is the first Australian winner at the U.S. Open since 1973, when Margaret Court won. She won with 6-2 and 6-3 scores. She picks up $1.8 million for the win and said, “I think I had one of my best dates. I was very fortunate to be able to do it on this stage in New York. I’ve been dreaming about this since I was 10, since I knew what a grand slam was. I do want to say, Serena, you are a great player and a fantastic champion and you have done wonders for our sport.”
