Meet the Porsche 918 RSR, a Hybrid Racecar

In December, we told you that Porsche announced plans to unveil a “spectacular” new vehicle at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and that some thought the cryptic announcement referred to the 918 Spyder concept. Well, folks, the rumors were true. Today Porsche unveiled the 918 RSR, a hybrid racecar evolving from last year’s 911 GT3 R and 918 Spyder concepts.

Sleek, sexy, and fuel efficient, the 918 RSR features a V8 engine powered by flywheel technology and a six-speed racing transmission. Electric motors on each of the front wheels provide 75 kilowatts of power each for a peak total of 767 horsepower.

"With the Porsche 918 RSR, the manufacturer of sporty premium vehicles is presenting a high-end synthesis of 2010's successful hybrid concepts," Porsche said in a statement. "The two-seater mid-engine coupé 918 RSR clearly reveals what happens when the technology fitted in the 911 GT3 R hybrid and the design of the 918 Spyder are transferred to a modern, innovative super sports car."

No word on when the car will go to market.

The Detroit Auto show opened today and runs until January 23rd. Porsche has not attended the show since 2007.

Here's a video for you to drool over.
