After Apple announced the iPad 2 on Wednesday, trade-ins for the original model skyrocketed. Additionally, Apple will give some recent iPad 1 buyers a $100 discount on the new model.
Gazelle.com was one of the first companies to advertise its buyback rates for iPad 1 unites. Just hours after the Apple keynote, demand for trade-ins was much higher than expected. That, coupled with Apple’s decision to drop the price of its original iPad by $100, led Gazelle.com to adjust their trade-in price.
As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 1,000 trades have already been cleared on the site. Another 2,000 were expected for Thursday.
According to Gazelle, the cheapest iPad, the 16GB Wi-Fi unit, is the most popular trade-in model – nearly 40% of the trade-ins have been that model. Gazelle’s Kristine Kennedy believes that the 16GB iPad makes a particularly good upgrade target, because the new iPad is the same price as what the original iPad was.
As for Apple, they will offer customers who purchased the iPad 1 within the last two weeks a $100 refund.
All of this signals that sales for the iPad 2 could be tremendous. With so many people willing to trade in after just seeing a keynote speech, not even having seen the model in person, it won’t be surprising that sales will see a boost after people do get to see the new model in person.
