If you’re an avid shopper on the ‘net, you’ve probably noticed which sites include free shipping and which ones make you pay for it. The good news, now, is that almost half of all online shopping orders have free shipping included!
Online retail spending reached $38 billion this quarter, up by almost $5 billion from the same quarter last year – economic recovery, perhaps? The growth is due to an increase in the number of shoppers (7% more), transactions per buy (up 9%), and tempered by a decline in spending per transaction (down 4%).
According to a ComScore report, free shipping on orders reached 47% this quarter, up from just 41% two quarters ago.
“A lot of consumers are taking free shipping for granted,” said ComScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni. The report also found that a whopping 61% of online shoppers are “at least somewhat likely” to cancel their entire purchase if free shipping isn’t involved. It seems we have come to expect that shipping should be free.
The allure of free shipping is no doubt an incentive to buy more – orders with free shipping average around 30% higher in value than those which tack on a few extra dollars to get the product from a warehouse to your house.
