Following years of declining sales, video game publisher Activision recently confirmed that they are shelving plans for current Guitar Hero video game related releases.
A statement from the publisher reads, “due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011.”
The statement went on to say, “These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world’s best interactive entertainment experiences.”
This news comes shortly after the announcement that rival developer of Rock Band, Harmonix, was dropped from the now-scaled-back MTV Games publishing unit. With that, Harmonix also reportedly laid off a considerable portion of its staff.
Guitar Hero was first published in 2005 and the series currently has seven major releases, plus four expansion packs on gaming consoles. The third title in the series, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, is claimed by Activision to be the first single video game title to exceed $1 billion in sales. The series has suffered declining sales numbers since 2009.
