What to Look for at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show

For a tech-toy lover, the annual Consumer Electronics Show can be a wonder-filled place. An enthusiast might feel a bit like a kid unleashed at FAO Schwarz, and with more than 100,000 visitors weaving their way through the crowded convention, the show may feel a bit chaotic, so here’s a quick guide on what to look out for if you’re headed there. The convention runs Thursday through Sunday, January 6-9, 2011.

3D: You can expect a growing number of 3D enabled technology. After the CES 2010’s show preview of 3D laptops, TVs, Blu-ray players, and consumer cameras, consumers have come to expect an appearance by 3D toys.  This year, however, 3D glasses will have a bigger presence. While a few select pairs have been announced for universal use, 3D glasses are generally not compatible across all TV brands. So, if your neighbors don’t have the same brand TV set you do, coming together for a Super Bowl party (in 3D) might not work how you planned.

4G: Ah yes, another Number/Letter hybrid. This time, the term applies to wireless connectivity.  “It means getting closer to a broadband-like environment on a mobile device,” said CEA chief economist and director of research Shawn DuBravac. “If one can get a broadband experience on a movle, it changes what that person can do on the device.”

Connected…everything. Speaking of 4G, imagine being able to access the Web anywhere, anytime, and from any device. TVs? Phones? Tablets? Yes, yes, and yes. What about video game consoles and Blu-ray players? You betcha. Dubravac said, “other devices like outlets, alarm clocks, and coffee pots [will be connected] as we build…We will start to see the first level of artificial intelligence integrated into these devices.”

Those seem to be the big three as far as showings, but consumers can also expect to see in-vehicle connectivity, content discovery (which would allow users to search for a certain media file over a variety of platforms), gestural interfaces (like the Wii and Kinect), and more tablets.
