Walter McGie of Kelso, Washington has been jailed for 2 counts of felony reckless driving. 70-year-old McGie claims he fainted while driving his 2007 Pontiac Vibe, resulting in a 60mph crash into the Edgewater Hotel & Casino Wednesday morning at 9:30am. 2 people were killed and 8 others were injured.
With all the car recalls lately, investigators are not ruling out the possiblity of a mechanical malfunction. Last month, unintended acceleration of 2009 and 2010 Vibes was caused by gas pedals getting stuck. There is no evidence that McGie applied the brakes prior to the crash.
Smashing through the glass doors, the car took out several rows of slot machines before stopping between the hotel registration desk and a cashier cage. "Slot machines were just everywhere, just wiped out, tumbled and tossed," said Bill Kinsey, fire division chief in Bullhead City, Arizona, which is not far from the casino's location in Laughlin, Nevada.
