Porsche is now taking orders for the 918 Spyder, the German automaker’s plug-in hybrid supercar. However, with a price of $845,000 (not including destination and handling charges) don’t expect to see the Spyder on city streets anytime soon.
“It’s certainly a rare car for someone who has the means, but it’s also for people who are very tuned in to technical advances and leading engineering,” said Gary Fong, a Porsche spokesman, in a telephone interview with The New York Times.
The 918 Spyder offers a 500-plus horsepower V-8 engine aided by two electric motors that total 218 horsepower. The car will allegedly go from zero to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, with a top speed of 199 mph. The Spyder’s lithium-ion batterly can be charged in three hours.
Porsche will only make 918 Spyders (get it?) with production beginning on September 18, 2013 (get it, again?). The first cars will be delivered to buyers in November 2013.
According to the NYT, customers who order the 918 Spyder will have the chance to purchase a special-edition 911 Turbo S, with styling, design and color cues reflecting the 918, for only $160,700 - $172,100 more. A bargain!
The 918 Spyder is Porsche’s most expensive model ever.
