Popular Hanukkah Game is Now a Major League Tournment

Spinning of the Dreidel has been a long held Jewish Tradition played for centuries. It is a gambling game played with a four sided top. Each side has a Hebrew letter on it. The object of the game is to guess which letter the dreidel will stop on. Children play this most often during Hanukkah. They will play for candy, nuts or anything.

Not to be stuck in the days old traditions, a group in New York City has created a tournament of dreidel play. The Major League Dreidel Tournament is held at a “Spinagogue” and begins with 120 entrants. They hold a cumulative qualifying round and then break down to 64 players in a head to head tourney, vaguely reminiscent of the NCAA brackets. Each round is set up as a Best of Three and culminates in a Best of Five championship. The winner receives a Crystal Dreidal Trophy and a year supply of chocolate coins or gelt.

Smaller Tournaments are popping up all over the country, with activities being held at community centers in Clearwater Florida as well as Denver Colorado.

If you’d like to play at home you can purchase the Official Spinning Stadium at Bed, Bath and Beyond. No sporting event would be complete without the availability of gear. T-shirts and Baseball Hats supporting the MLD are for sale at cafepress.com too.
