Natural Disasters In Japan Cause Supply Shortages For Electronics,

If you missed out and didn’t get your iPad2 when Apple launched the new tablet a few weeks ago you may have to wait a bit longer for it. After the natural disasters in Japan, analysts are predicting a shortage of components that could impact several consumer electronics, with the iPad2 being one of them.

There are five parts that originate from Japan that will be hard to get as production has slowed. They are storage and memory from Toshiba, memory from Elpida, an electronic compass from AKM Semiconductor and the touch screen overlay from Asahi Glass Co.  The battery form Apple may also experience some supply chain issues.

Even though a few of these companies have said they suffered no damage from the earthquake or the tsunami they may still be affected by logistical issues in the country. Japan is suffering through power outages and transportation hurdles, making it difficult to ship raw materials and finished product.

Asahi Glass has suffered some damage to its facilities creating a backlog in production.  Apple relies on their new glass called Dragontail, making a replacement risky.

Apple is already backordered with demand for the iPad2 higher than expected. Consumers who ordered on line are faced with 4-5 week wait.  Hopefully, the wait won’t be much longer.

The supply issues face by Apple may also be faced by other consumer electronics manufacturers.  As demand remains consistent while supply dwindles, prices may spike.  If you are in the market for a new phone, tablet or laptop now may be the best time to buy before price increases hit.
