The day when I can eat breakfast and read the newspaper on my way to work, in the comfort and privacy of my own vehicle, may be getting closer. Google has been testing self-driving cars that use video cameras, radar sensors, lasers, maps and more to cruise around town.

In as little as 8 years these cars could be seen more commonly on the roads, which they say will increase safety, productivity, and energy efficiency. Google isn't the first to invent this concept though of course. The U.S. Defense Department has been toying with autonomous vehicles for several years now, plus European car companies, universities, and even the German Federal Armed Forces have all had their hands on unmanned motor vehicles.
