Bets had been taken earlier this week as to what color the Queen’s hat would be for today’s wedding. The Queen, who is never seen in public without a hat, favors bright colors. So Londoners placed $10.00 bets based on the colors the Queen was most frequently photographed in.
The most common colors have been blues, purples and whites, even a few reds were spotted. Yellow was the favorite color at BetED.com, which paid out $15.00 for every $10.00 placed.
“Hats have long denoted status,” said Oriole Cullen, curator of a Victoria & Albert Museum 2009 hat exhibit that is currently in Australia, and will be in New York this fall. Cullen points out, “Up until the 1950’s a woman wasn’t even considered properly dressed unless she was wearing a hat and gloves.”
The Royals have a long history of being photographed wearing hats. The Queen Mum preferred flouncy feathered hats while her daughter, Queen Elizabeth, favors the same blocked style.
Well, if you bet she would wear red, blue, purple or green your money was wasted. Those that bet she would be in yellow just earned themselves $15.00 for every $10.00 that was bet.
