The DeLorean, the iconic '80s sports car best known for its starring role in Back to the Future, could soon become the car of the future. Last week, the folks at DeLorean Motor Company unveiled DMC-12 EV, an all-electric DeLorean prototype due to hit the market in 2013.
"The car of the future has really become the car of the future," James Espey, a DeLorean Motor Company vice president, told ABC News.
The DeLorean prototype, a joint project between DeLorean Motor Company and Epic Electric Vehicles, has the equivalent of 260 hp and can reach speeds of 125 mph. The vehicle can drive 70 to 100 miles on a single charge and boasts a battery life of seven years.
If everything goes as planned, custom-built, electric-powered DeLoreans will be available sometime in 2013. Of course, the vehicle won’t come cheap. Auto enthusiasts can expect to pay $90,000 to $100,000 for the updated sports car.
Epsey says many people are excited by the idea of an electric-powered DeLorean, though the motor company isn’t accepting pre-orders just yet.
“We're getting a lot of good feedback," Espey said. "People are offering to make deposits."
Based in Humble, Texas, the DeLorean Motor Company repairs existing DMC-12s and assembles eight to ten custom-built DeLoreans a year.
