Curators at the Harley-Davidson ™ Museum have pulled out a few of their stranger items from the archives for the newest exhibit “Collection X: Weird, Wild Wonders of the Harley-Davidson Museum.”
The idea for the exhibit came from the behind-the-scenes tours that visitors can take.
"You see the look on people's faces when you let them into the climate-controlled storage area and we begin to pull out this treasure," said Jim Fricke, curatorial director. "So we decided to play off the kind of mystery embodied in the kind of secret storehouse. That's where the theme came from."
Among the oddities are an all leather motorcycle made in Japan, a 1920’s leather facemask and displays of trophies dating back to the 1900’s.
The bikes that the Museum chose to display highlight a side of the iconic motorcycle manufacturer that is lesser known.
On display is a 1978 prototype of a liquid-cooled-motor-cross bike. It was first created when the company thought about branching to the motor cross business. The three-wheeled experimental vehicle known as “Project K”, which is a hybrid of a car and motorcycle with a Harley engine is also part of the exhibit.
Museum vice president Bill Davidson, the great-grandson of Harley Davidson Motor Co. co-founder William A. Davidson, gets goose bumps just walking through the exhibit.
When talking about the exhibit Davidson said, "It's very rewarding for me to see these and remember back when we were actually testing them, riding them. Very exciting.”
