Michael Vick Signs $100M, 6-Year Deal with Eagles

Michael Vick agreed to a contract earlier this month with the Philadelphia Eagles that makes him one of the NFL’s highest paid players – the deal is worth $100 million, including $40 million guaranteed, over 6 years.

Vic was due to earn slightly more than $16 million this season, but with the deal, he will earn a bit less than that. His reduced salary may give the Eagles' salary cap enough flexibility to give Pro Bowl wide receiver DeSean Jackson an extension.

Apple Stock Dives 6 Percent, Company Loses $5.5 Billion

After Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced his resignation yesterday, it seemed only natural that shares for the company’s stock would take a dip in price. After hours last night, the stock was trending down more than 6 percent in value. As of this morning, the decline was closer to 2%, but it still cuts the company’s market value by $5.5 billion.

As of 9:45 a.m. EST  this morning, Apple’s stock was trading at $369.79, down 1.7 percent. The early morning trading gave Apple a market capitalization of about $348.8 billion, down by about $5.5 billion from Wednesday night.

Groupon: In a Downward Spiral?

As of its last SEC filing, the group-discount-coupon company Groupon reportedly owed merchants $392 million. Unfortunately, it only has $225 million in the bank – not great. Additionally, the company owes $681 million in current liabilities, but only has $376 million in current assets. Folks, this does not bode well for the coupon retailer.

AT&T Kills $10 Data Plan, Overcharges Everyone

AT&T has announced it will be discontinuing its $10/1,000 text messaging plan, and now customers will have to choose between spending 20 cents for each text message sent and received, or opting into a $20/unlimited texting plan.

Based on the pricing for AT&T’s regular data plan, the texting prices are, well… exorbitant, to say the least. The company offers a $25/unlimited data plan, which includes 2 gigabytes of data. Broken down, that’s 80 megabytes per dollar. 80 megabytes equals 500,000 text messages – and that’s if they’re the full capacity – not just something like “what’s up?” or “lol.”

Diana Nyad Abandons 103-Mile Swim

Yesterday, we told you the extraordinary story of 61-year-old Diana Nyad, who had begun a 103-mile swim from Cuba to Florida in attempts to be the first recorded person to make the swim without using a shark cage. Unfortunately, Nyad was forced to abandon her journey after 29 hours in the water – about halfway through the trip.

Nyad was vomiting when she was brought aboard a boat at 12:45 a.m. last night. She had struggled through ocean swells, should pain, and asthma all day Monday before she was forced to give up the 103-mile swim.

“I’m not sad. It was absolutely the right call,” Nyad said.

Diana Nyad Attempts Swim from Cuba to Florida

Plenty of people have trouble hitting the gym just three times a week. But for 61-year-old Diana Nyad, exercise isn’t just a chore – it’s a dream.  At 7:45 last night, Nyad jumped into the water and began the 103-mile swim from Cuba to Florida.

For nearly two years, Nyad has been training to set a record for open-water swims without a shark cage (the very fact that shark cage is even mentioned has me squirming with fear!).

“I’m almost 62 years old and I’m standing here at the prime of my life,” Nyad said as she walked towards the sea. “I think this is the prime. When one reaches this age, you still have a body that’s strong but now you have a better mind.”

What Are the Top Ten Most-Stolen Cars?

If you’ve ever worried about whether your car is prime for the stealing, you’re not alone. And unfortunately, it’s not those of you who drive newer cars that really have to watch out – thieves tend to go for “older” cars, since their parts are still valuable.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau’s annual report tracks stolen vehicles as reported by law enforcement agencies. So why the older-car agenda? Thanks to both increasingly effective anti-theft devices in new cars, plus the general assumption that older cars need not be protected as carefully as newer cars, the older cars tend to be easier to steal!

Florida Sells Drivers’ Info, Makes $63M

The state of Florida has reportedly earned $63 million after selling what many people think is personal information – the names, addresses, dates of birth, and the vehicles driven of the state’s 15.5 million drivers. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, it’s totally legal.

Ann Howard of the Florida Dept. of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, says, “Per federal mandate, there are companies that are entitled to this information. Insurance companies, for example, are entitled to this information. Employers are entitled to this information.”

The state is currently selling the information to companies including Lexus Nexus and Shadow Soft. Those companies gather people’s data and sell it, but they must sign contracts with the state claiming they won’t harass people (sounds promising, doesn’t it?).
